Rooted in Adventure
Behind great products, there is often a great story, and every great story begins with an adventure. This is one man’s overland adventure, the desire to continue exploring and the drive to improve upon the experience.
It all began with the photographic journey of two friends – Jeep Kitchen Founder Alan Smith and his close friend, and fellow adventurer, David DuChemin, during an expedition to Inuvik, at the Arctic Circle.
Over the course of six weeks, they would travel through British Columbia over the chilly waters of the Inside Passage, up through Whitehorse and Dawson City. And from there, up the traitorous, shale laden Dempster Highway to one the most beautiful parks in all of rugged Canada, Tombstone Territorial Park.
A few daily rituals occur during a trip: stopping every few feet for photographs on a good day, stopping for a bathroom break and setting up camp in the pathway of river or (as it turned out) a hunting trail for wolves running down elk. And one particular reoccurrence at -15° C/5° F in the morning and throughout chilly, day-lit hours, was setting up and preparing warm meals.
After returning home to think about all his future trips with family and the many times he had frozen hands waiting for food, or while loading and unloading his fridge and stove, Alan realized he had a solvable problem. He began to imagine how to first, more quickly prepare something to eat, and then how to create a system to better maximize the storage space so that all the gear was easier to get at and took far less effort to re-pack.
That is when the first wooden one level prototype was created. From this one simple solution came a bigger vision. One that could help his family and other world wide adventures improve on the usage of space and ease of setting up for meal time.
Now over eight years and six prototypes have passed since that memorable journey and today we prove solutions that serve all sorts of flatbed and sport utility vehicles for overlanders, campers and out-door-enthusiasts seeking to spend more time exploring than loading their kitchen and coolers from trunk to picnic table.
